I have since outfitted it with a solar system, shower and furnishings and live in it full time. For the next year or so anyway.

The cabin stays pretty warm with the woodstove. It was 23 below a few weeks ago and it was 80 in here!

A tiny self-built cabin in Montana. Owned and shared by Fred Beal.

  1. I would love to know how you ended up designing your shower (inside or outside of your cabin) and to see what it looks like. I am newly off grid but haven’t added the solar energy part yet or a shower because I haven’t figured out the simplest way to do it and I would love some advice. Hot water on your shower? Gravity feed I assume but is it close to the cabin or set apart? I am really curious how you designed it since I love the rest of your cabin so much. 🙂 I hope you get to live in it as long as you want.

    Thanks!!!

  2. So, the water storage tank, solar batteries and inverter charger occupy a 16″ deep space against the back wall, in the area that is vacant in the photos above. Just in front of that is a store bought shower base. I built a simple wood frame around that to enclose the shower. There is a shower curtain on two sides and corrugated metal on two sides. A shelf is on top of the enclosure. I cut a hole in the top of a blue 6 gallon water container (Wal Mart). I put hot water in that and then place it on the shelf. The tank has a spigot on it. 3 gallons is plenty for a shower.
