Cozy Cabin Retreat Boasts Net-Zero Energy In The Pacific Northwest

This cozy cabin retreat is nestled into the natural landscape of this stunning property. Consisting of two modest cabins, a new cabin, and the renovation of an existing cabin. The cozy cabin retreat is located on an island in Washington.

goCstudio is responsible for the design of this cabin.

First, the project team was mindful of the environmental impact of these structures on the site, with the goal of energy efficiency and net-zero in terms of energy use.

Then, a thirty-five-panel solar array was installed on the south-facing roof of the existing cabin.

Next, energy efficiency also influenced the material selection for the structures. This provided an excellent opportunity to explore ways of using wood.

Its exterior siding is a reverse board and batten system with varied vertical board widths. A nod to traditional siding methods, this provides the cabins with a clean, modern aesthetic.

The dark stain selected for the exterior facade enables some of the natural red hues of the fir to come through.

Interior Design For This Cozy Cabin Retreat

Interior design brings a lighter finish while using the same material. This allows for a fresh take on a traditional cabin interior.

The interior was completely transformed to allow for a new communal living/dining/kitchen space.

The wood rafters and roof decking were sandblasted to reveal their natural color and beauty.

An entry bench and wire-brushed fir wainscoting welcome guests into the Bunk House.

The sleeping cabin features four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. The homeowners already had this unique bunk bed that the project team repurposed in this space for the kid’s bedroom.

Simple, crisp details along with the light wood walls make the interiors feel spacious and modern yet familiar and comfortable.
